Herpes: what is it?
Herpes is a viral infection very common in the United States - it is estimated that 80 million people in America are affected with one of its strains. As an STD, around 1 in 5 Americans are infected and, it is estimated that because its symptoms are often mild and an STD testis not undertaken, as many as a third of those infected with genital Herpes are unaware of their condition. It is estimated that 80% of Americans have oral Herpes - more commonly known as a cold sore.
There are two types of the Herpes Simplex virus which can both be detected with a Herpes test Herpes Simplex Type 1 and Herpes Simplex Type 2. Both strains of the Herpes Simplex virus look identical under a microscope and either can result in oral or genital Herpes. Generally speaking though, Type 1 Herpes Simplex affects the mouth and Type 2 affects the genitals.
Herpes testing involves a blood sample or a swab from a recent open genital sore.
Although there is no cure for Herpes, both strains of the Herpes Simplex virus are manageable and detectable through STD testing with a Herpes test. Some will experience outbreaks which can be lessened by antiviral episodic or suppressive therapy. However, most healthy people will find herpes outbreaks uncomfortable but seldom dangerous.
